We were looking for a kitchen table that would accommodate all five of us and most of us now, kids included our adult size, and so we needed a bit of a bigger table. So we decided to look for an oval kind of table, but we have a very small dining area in our house and so we needed one that was three approximately three feet by five feet. So we went to the Habitat for Humanity, Restore and found this great oval table with four chairs. Uh to you know up especially on the surface of the table, and so in spite of that we decided to get.
It was a really good deal and of course it came with the chairs, and the chairs is one thing: we really needed, we've been using benches, but the kids are just getting too big for the benches. The benches keep slamming into the wall and things like that and when they're trying to get up and so as useful as those benches were when the kids were small and when we had a lot of little ones running around they're, not he's useful anymore. So this table, so it came with the table and the four chairs, and so then we headed to Walmart to pick up some stuff to do the refinishing.
So what I decided on was Min wax um, wood sheen, it's water-based, it's a rubbing, stain and finish, and it is in the color plantation walnut', and so it's just one of those things where you rub it on and you wipe it off. I also got some polyurethane to go over top Min wax fast-drying polyurethane in the clear gloss and we picked that up at Walmart got them on a great sale um. I think there were five and six dollars kind of thing.
Super cheap super super great deal so I'll leave those details in the description below if you're interested in picking up some of that, so we were able to get it home managed to fit in the back of the van and of course we have a couple of Teenagers that were able to help us unload and move everything into the back yard, so this table is an oval shape that comes with a leaf inside like a removable leaf, and it just has some latches that hold it in place, which is kind of cool.
So if we needed to make this the table smaller, we could, I don't think, we'll be needing to do that anytime soon, but it is nice to have that option rather than to just have you know a solid oval top, so we got this table set up In the backyard - and we just started sanding off the finish, so my plan was to just do the top in a natural stain, the plantation, walnut, color stain and then the rest of the table in a vintage white kind of look with a distressing.
These are a little bit pricier and craft paint from Dollar Tree does just as well. So after we got it all sanded down, we brought it in. I started staining it. I did two layers of the stain and painted the base white, so I painted the pedestal and the skirt around the edge of the table there and ended up doing three layers of the white.
